Panel 1: A CIO Perspective: The IT Modernization and Cybersecurity Paradigm

More than ever agency IT leaders face the dynamic challenge of modernizing their networks and systems to deliver high value cloud-based solutions that enhance mission effectiveness. Now add the ever evolving and sophisticated cyber security posture with a declining budget, shrinking workforce as well as legislative and technology demands to the mix and you have one very complex effort. Welcome to a day in the life of the modern CIO. This session will discuss:

  • How are you defining and identifying your high value assets? What role do they play in your IT modernization plans to keep them secure?
  • How are you approaching shared services as a tool for efficiency gains, mitigate duplication of resources and automate business processes? How can we refocus agency operations around these central missions?
  • How are you recruiting, training and retaining your workforce in today’s modernization and cybersecurity paradigm?

Speakers

  • Moderator: Ralph Kahn, VP of Federal, Tanium
  • Dorothy Aronson, Chief Information Officer, NSF
  • Max Everett, Chief Information Officer, DOE
  • Francisco Salguero, Deputy Chief Information Officer, USDA
  • Zachary Goldstein, Chief Information Officer, NOAA

Panel 2: IT and Professional Services Delivery: A New Model

Forget everything you thought you knew about IT and professional services delivery. With constant and increasing focus on driving cost and operational efficiencies, The Traditional IT and Professional Services models are now giving way to a new approach. IT and Professional Services are closely working together as inter-related components of an agency’s larger acquisition strategy for the future.  This session will explore what this means in practice. Topics to be addressed include:

  • The driving factors behind this new model and the factors to consider in its implementation
  • The importance of collaboration, not just in creating the model but in following through
  • The benefits seen by the customer community
  • Strategies for continually improving the model and raising the bar for service excellence
Speakers
  • Moderator: Jason Miller, Executive Editor/Reporter, WFED
  • Mario Lopez, Program Director, NOAALink Program Officer, NOAA
  • Jay Standring, Pro-Tech Branch Chief, NOAA
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Panel 3: A Cyber Perspective: Protecting Critical Infrastructure

If government and industry don’t dramatically boost their efforts to protect critical infrastructure, such as the electric grids and nuclear reactors, we risk a 9/11 level cyberattack according to the Homeland Security Department’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council. To stave off and prepare for such an attack, we must create highly secure communication networks and cyber threat information sharing that are used solely for critical command and control systems. This session will discuss:

  • How is your agency sharing information and threat intelligence with the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies?
  • What are your protection controls between the operational technology (OT) networks of critical infrastructure providers and their normal, business related TI networks? What are your user authentication and access control privileges on network within critical infrastructure?
  • As more and more control systems go online, what best practices and strategies can agencies deploy to integrate security into a vendor-neutral IoT ecosystem from devices to data and still deliver the benefits of IoT?
Speakers
  • Moderator: Joseph Marks, Senior Correspondent, Cybersecurity, Nextgov
  • Rod Turk, Acting Chief Information Officer, DOC
  • Wayne Jones, Chief Information Officer, NNSA, DOE
